Summary:

Did you hear the story about the Mule Team in eastern Pennsylvania? In 2002 four organizations — one heritage area and three art groups — partnered to present an amazing public display of life-sized fiberglass mules. Miles of Mules, History with a Colorful Kick made its debut with four mule prototypes in July 2002 and in 2003 over 170 four-legged friends joined in on the fun. Why mules? Our "mane" story goes back to the 19th century when coal mines, canals and farms flourished in eastern Pennsylvania and in towns across the Delaware River in New Jersey. Anthracite coal drove industry into this vast area and the business capitalized on the strengths of one lively hybrid beast — the mule! The first question that faced us was how to honor the animal's contribution. We began by sculpting mules in two poses — one stately and one stubborn. Sponsors and artists enjoyed free reign to create their themes and decorate their masterpieces. Mules showed up with long flowing manes, bottle caps and even scales. The results were amazing and astounding beyond our wildest expectations. So trot through the pages and see the creations produced by the artists — from renowned to emerging, from school children to nonprofits. Greet the mules which towed eastern Pennsylvania through the summer and fall of 2003. --Amazon
